Description
What can we do?
We are all asking ourselves this question. We read the news, scroll down our social feeds, and wonder two things: how did we get here? And what can we do about it?
What am I doing to make the world a better place? What can I do to help? It’s easy to think that there’s not much we can do, or that whatever we do is just not going to change anything.
For the past week, I’ve been meditating on this question. It became a koan of sort for me. What can I do? What can I do? The question repeated itself to me at every moment.
Then, I realized that I could only do what I know how to do. I picked up my brush, grab a piece of paper, and I did it.
The calligraphy that came out that morning (pictured above) is my sentiment to the current state affairs in the United States and the world.
The two prominent characters read 平等 byōdō, and it means “equality.” The small characters read 不経一事 不長一智 ichiji o hazareba, itchi o chō zesu and it means “one thing not experienced, is one wisdom not gained.”
After I wrote this, I contemplated what to do with it. It’s a vigorous calligraphy with a powerful statement, but it wouldn’t do any good rolled up on a corner in my studio.
The purpose of Zen calligraphy is to reveal our kiai (energetic vitality) and realization using brush and ink in such a way that can transform anyone who encounters it.
Since this calligraphy cannot transform anyone while hiding in my studio, I decided to send it out to the world.
I’m putting this calligraphy for an auction to help stand against inequality and racism. I will donate all proceeds to significant charities fighting for fairness and equality.
I hope you consider bidding on this calligraphy.
