Description
Shodo examinations are offered every quarter. Students interested in taking these optional exams must complete the registration and submit their work by the due date.
To submit assignments for Shodo examinations, students must send their original work via snail mail. Each submission must include a self-addressed stamped envelope to receive back the corrected exam. Students taking a “dan 段” exam will also receive a certificate upon advancing to the next level. The requirement for original work is crucial, as it allows the instructor to accurately assess the quality of the lines, the texture and type of paper used, and the dimensions of the characters. These elements are integral to the art of Shodo and cannot be properly evaluated through digital submissions or copies. By examining the original pieces, instructors can provide precise feedback and ensure that the student’s work meets the highest standards necessary for advancement. This traditional method preserves the authenticity and integrity of the evaluation process, reflecting the discipline and respect inherent in the practice of Shodo.
To advance in kyū or dan level, students must write the assignment as accurately as possible, following the exemplar provided. If the submitted work is unsatisfactory, the student will remain at the same level until the next assignment is submitted. Remaining at the same level does not signify failure; advancing to the next level often requires multiple submissions and may not occur on the first submission.
The ranking system in Shodo mirrors that of many Japanese martial arts. Beginner levels, known as “kyū 級” ranks, start from 10th kyū and progress to 1st kyū. After achieving 1st kyū, students advance to “dan 段” ranks, akin to black belts ranging from 1st to 8th dan.

These levels do not create a hierarchical structure among students but serve as milestones in their Shodo journey, providing a map and motivation to continue their diligent practice.
