The art of Japanese Calligraphy (書道 Shodo) is more than just writing kanji or Chinese characters. The activity of brushing kanji can help us relax and calm our minds and spirits. If you immerse yourself in that activity, you will be fully aware and present at that moment. The experience of this practice can have a lasting impact on our daily lives by giving us the power to bring that same calmness and clarity into other life activities. Writing with a brush enhances our sensitivity and hones our awareness at even the smallest of movements, therefore making Shodo a great complement to martial arts training.
While mindful writing is in the essence of Shodo, there are techniques and skills one must acquire to have such experience. Otherwise, the activity of writing kanji can be frustrating and upsetting. Shodo is not easy; it requires patience, perseverance, and dedication.
Learn the fundamentals of training in traditional Japanese Calligraphy in this ongoing 2-hour class taught by Esteban Martinez. This hands-on workshop will have students follow samples provided by Martinez Sensei to practice writing kanji characters in calligraphy. Also, students will learn how to use the calligraphy brush, and to maintain the proper posture during writing as well as the philosophy of Shodo practice.
